5Pacella_Thoughts on bell hooks

“Thoughts on bell hooks” 30″ x 42″ found images on shredded drawing and old canvas.

This piece came to me while reading bell hooks’s “Feminist theory: from margin to center.” At that moment in my life I realized how limited my ideas about feminism were, how they were shaped by my privilege, and whose voices were being left out of the women’s movements – both past and present. This piece is hopefully the first of a series centering around white privilege and affluence.

Endearingly referred to as, “That Time I Fell Apart,” this piece deals with the pain of suddenly losing one’s friends and then pulling it back together again. Chaos and darkness are mitigated with moments of clarity and light until the places of hope and peace shine brighter.
